"How long will my bathroom be torn apart?" is one of the first questions almost every homeowner asks me. The honest answer: most full bathroom remodels in Utah County take 3 to 5 weeks once we start swinging hammers. Here is what actually happens week by week, and the real reasons a job runs long.
I am Dakota. I have run remodeling crews across Utah County for 13-plus years, from older homes in Provo and Springville to newer builds in Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mountain. Every bathroom is a little different, but the timeline follows the same basic shape. Let me walk you through it so you know what to expect before you sign anything.
Quick answer: a simple refresh with the same layout often finishes in 2 to 3 weeks. A full remodel with new tile and a layout change usually runs 3 to 5 weeks. A bigger primary bath with a custom tile shower, or two bathrooms going at once, can stretch to 5 to 7 weeks.
Before demo even starts
The clock most homeowners picture does not include what happens before day one. This part is not wasted time, it is what keeps the actual construction fast.
Design and material selection: 1 to 3 weeks
We walk your bathroom, talk through your goals, and help you pick tile, a vanity, a shower system, and fixtures. Homeowners who already know their style move through this fast. If you are still deciding between three tile options, give yourself extra time here so we are not waiting on you once demo starts.
Permits: 1 to 3 weeks
Most bathroom remodels that touch plumbing, electrical, or move a wall need a permit. Utah County cities each run their own permit desk. Provo, Orem, Spanish Fork, Lehi, and American Fork each have their own timing, and unincorporated Utah County runs through the county office. We pull the permit and handle the paperwork, but the review time is out of our hands. Building this into your timeline up front avoids a surprise delay.
Ordering tile and glass: 3 to 6 weeks (can overlap with the above)
This is the step homeowners underestimate the most. Popular, in-stock tile can ship in days. Special order tile, and custom glass shower enclosures cut to fit your exact opening, can take 4 to 8 weeks from order to delivery. We order as soon as you decide so the tile and glass are sitting in the warehouse, not holding up your crew.

Here is the general order once your materials are on site and the permit is in hand. Your exact schedule can shift a few days depending on your layout.
Week 1: demo and rough-in
We tear out the old bathroom down to the studs or subfloor, depending on scope. Plumbers and electricians move or add lines for your new layout. In older Provo and Springville homes, this is where we sometimes find surprises behind the wall, more on that below.
Week 2: inspections, framing, and waterproofing
The city inspects the rough plumbing and electrical before we close up the walls. Once it passes, we frame any layout changes, install the shower pan or curb, and waterproof the whole wet area. This step matters more than people realize. A rushed waterproofing job is the number one cause of a leak years down the road.
Week 3: tile
Tile setting is the slowest, most detail-heavy part of the job. A simple shower surround might take 2 to 3 days. A large-format tile floor, a tiled niche, a bench, and a full glass enclosure can take a full week on its own. This is where quality shows, so we do not rush it.
Week 4: fixtures, vanity, and glass
The vanity, toilet, shower glass, faucets, mirror, and light fixtures go in. This is when your bathroom starts looking finished, but the details still take real time to get right.
Week 5: paint, punch list, and final walkthrough
Paint, caulk, final cleaning, and a walkthrough with you to catch anything that needs adjusting. We do not consider the job done until you are happy with every detail.
What actually causes delays
In 13-plus years, the delays I see are almost always one of these three things, not bad luck.
Tile or glass on back order
This is the most common one. If a tile you fell in love with is out of stock at the manufacturer, it can add weeks. We always show you in-stock alternatives up front so you have a fast backup plan.
Surprises behind the walls
Older homes in Provo, Springville, and Spanish Fork sometimes have outdated plumbing, old wiring, or water damage hiding behind the tile. We cannot see this until demo. When we find it, we stop, show you exactly what we found, and give you an honest price before moving forward. That conversation takes a day or two, but it is time well spent compared to covering up a real problem.
Changing your mind mid-project
Swapping tile or fixtures after we have already ordered material, or after tile is already on the wall, is the single biggest schedule killer. Take your time deciding up front. Once we start, try to hold your decisions steady.
How to keep your project on schedule: pick your tile, vanity, and fixtures before demo day, order everything as soon as you decide, and expect 1 to 3 weeks for permits depending on your city. Those three things solve most of the delays we ever run into.
